SOWETO - The African National Congress (ANC) branches from Dobsonville and Braamfischer in Soweto held a march and prayer session on Sunday, to highlight the escalating rape cases in the township.

The march, supported by local churches, aimed to encourage residents to speak out against women and child abuse.

At least 50 people participated in the march.  Church and community leaders handed out pamphlets with emergency numbers to community members.

The march to Braamfischer Hall ended with a prayer service for rape victims across the country.

Organisers said it was important to have the march in Soweto because of the gang rape video which went viral over a month ago.

This week, a court handed down 17 life sentences to Jazzman Rikhotso for raping 11 women and a child at the Avalon Cemetery, also in Soweto.
