JOHANNESBURG - For the first time, a United Nations (UN) rights chief will visit Zimbabwe on Sunday.

Navi Pillay was invited by President Robert Mugabe's government, which wants to prove that it is not a violator of human rights.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and former South African high court judge, said she was looking forward to the high-profile trip.

Pillay will spend five days in that country.

She is due to meet Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, civil society and several key ministers.

Pillay is an outspoken defender of gay rights; an emotive and politicised issue in Zimbabwe, ahead of the constitutional referendum and elections.
