CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department on Thursday said its systems show there are hundreds of unaccounted children at the embattled ACJ Phakdade primary school in Strand.
The Argus reported how grade one pupils are using ice creams tubs as desks, while sitting on the floor while being taught.
The department's Bronagh Casey said Western Cape Education MEC Donald Grant will be visiting the school to investigate the matter on Thursday.
She cited a breakdown of communication between the department and the school as the problem.
"There was a communication breakdown between the school and the department. On our system, the figures are incorrect in terms of how many learners are enrolled in that school. There are 500 learners unaccounted for on that system.”
