CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Community Safety Department on Thursday said it is gravely concerned by the fresh outbreaks of gang violence in suburbs across the Cape Peninsula.

Hot spot areas include Steenberg, Hanover Park, Elsies River, Manenberg, Belhar, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha.

In Hanover Park alone, four people were killed and three wounded during a gunfight between rival gangs over the weekend.

Over the last few days, three people died in similar shootings in Manenberg and Elsies River.

Western Cape Community Safety MEC Dan Plato said communities continue to live in fear.

“The fact that it is so spread is a big worry. It is not evident to one area. It is very worrying that people need to dive and cover when there are bullets around them.”

Plato believes police needs to step up their game.

“It is for that reason I ask the South African Police Services that their intelligence unravels what is going on. They need to be on top of the situation and they need to find the perpetrators.”
