CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department has reiterated all schools should be drug and weapon free zones.

Western Cape Education MEC Donald Grant said there is no place for gangsterism in schools.

He visited Manyano High in Khayelitsha on Tuesday.

There has been an increase in gang violence at the school in recent months.

Last week, two learners were involved in a stabbing incidents while on their way home.

Grant said this will not be tolerated.

“We need our learners to feel safe and secure at our schools so that they can learn. Any learners found with illegal substances will be dealt with by the law.”

Grant added schools are a place of learning and not violence.

“Why is it that our learners have to form part of gangs as opposed to being involved with homework activities in the afternoons? So it is up to our learners to make a choice for him or herself.”
