CAPE TOWN - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate on Wednesday said it was disappointed that 12 Hawks members, arrested on murder charges, are still on duty.
The dozen accused appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
The officials are accused of torturing to death Sidwell Mkwambi in 2009.
The directorate's Moses Dlamini said initially, 14 officials were investigated.
“The decision of the Director of Public Prosecutions is not to prosecute those members at his stage. We will respect that decision. We felt there was sufficient evidence to prosecute the 14.”
He said he hopes internal disciplinary steps will be taken against the members.
“They are still at work. They have not been suspended. We made recommendations for them to be suspended. Of course it is a concern because they are facing very serious charges.”
Police said the officers have been redeployed to other areas.
