SOWETO - President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday opened the Soweto International Conference on Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto campus.

The initiative will communicate with small business owners in townships, and create ways to improve their businesses.

Zuma said in order to develop South African communities more investment is needed in small businesses.

The president added that townships, including Soweto, have already seen an improvement in services and infrastructure.

He believes Soweto is slowly becoming a city of its own, within the City of Johannesburg.

This year’s annual conference is the second one of its kind.

The focus on this year's gathering is the industrialisation of townships, with entrepreneurs being urged to contribute to improving roads and infrastructure.
