JOHANNESBURG – Controversial Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli should be removed from the police, expelled ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema said on Monday.

He made the comments at a National Press Club conference at the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Illovo, north of Johannesburg.

On Wednesday, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa told Parliamentarians that Mdluli would be shifted from his position, while an investigation into claims of a conspiracy against him were being investigated.

According to Malema, Mdluli is a threat to national security.

“He must be released from his responsibilities - it’s a serious threat to state security. I don’t know why the leadership is so scared.”

Malema said Mdluli’s presence in the police will continue to breed fear and paranoia.

“When you greet on the phone, you first greet the person you are calling then you must greet Mdluli.”

Malema also spoke out for the first time since the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee of Appeals (NDCA) upheld his expulsion.

The defiant politician vowed to make a political comeback and said he will one day lead the ruling party.

“I can tell you today that I am going to lead the ANC.”

The fiery leader said he will remain president of the ANCYL, claiming only its leadership could decide his fate.
