CAPE TOWN - The ANC in the Western Cape on Monday expressed its shock at Helen Zille's attitude towards the Public Protector.

A draft report by Thuli Madonsela's office of an investigation into a communications contract between the provincial government and advertising agency TBWA Hunt Lascaris, was leaked last week.

The report apparently found the contract to be "invalid" and should be terminated.

However, Zille slammed the leaking, saying some of the conclusions in the draft report were "legally flawed".

ANC Western Cape Provincial Secretary Songezo Mjongile said they were alarmed at Zille's arrogant attitude on the matter.

“I would have expected her to stand on the side of the Public Protector and commit herself in dealing with maladministration and corruption wherever it raises it's ugly head.”

He claimed Zille was undermining the integrity of the Public Protector's office.

But Zille told the media on Sunday while they do not want to cast aspersions on the Public Protector herself, the leaking of the report is prejudicial.

“We believe this premature leak prejudices the administration of justice and compromises our rights.”

Both the ANC and DA are set to make submissions to the Public Protector on the matter on Thursday.

In 2011, Zille said she would resign if Madonsela found any “corruption” in the awarding of the TBWA Hunt Lascaris tender, but she has since changed her tune.

She had threatened to take the matter to court if she does not change her “observations.”
