JOHANNESBURG - The official funeral service for former Cooporative Governance Minister Sicelo Shiceka is underway.

He died at an Eastern Cape hospital in April after a long illness.

Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula opened the service with the singing of the national anthem.

The late minister’s coffin was draped with the South African flag.

Shiceka’s political career was mired in controversy when he was fired from his job in 2011, following allegations that he abused public funds for his own personal use.

He will be laid to rest at the West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg.
