CAPE TOWN - A fishing trawler with several men on board has run aground at Clifton Beach in the Western Cape.

The Japanese vessel ran aground in thick fog at around 6.30am on Saturday.

Around 28 fishermen are on the ship.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said they are trying to get the crew to safety.

The institute has asked the public to stay away from the beach as curious spectators are hampering rescue efforts.

The NSRI said it will try and tug the vessel out to sea during high tide.

Authorities are concerned that the vessel could crash into nearby rocks.
