PRETORIA - The former boyfriend of a missing Centurion woman on Friday said he lodged a complaint of alleged police brutality with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, against officers in Pretoria.
Zwelibanzi Zungu (30) is facing charges in connection with the murder of Nandi Mbizane (27), who disappeared from her flat in March.
Zungu applied for bail on Friday.
During the proceedings, Zungu told the court he was beaten by police on different occasions.
He also claimed that the officers assaulted his mother, bugged his phone and harassed his family and friends.
Zungu further accused Hawks boss General Shadrack Sibiya of ordering the alleged brutality.
He said he was surprised when Sibiya requested to meet with him, to question him on Mbizane’s whereabouts.
Zungu handed himself over to police in April 2012, a few days after his picture was circulated in the media.
He maintains that he does not know what happened to his former lover.
Mbizane was last seen with Zungu and her current boyfriend. Initially, both men were arrested in connection with her disappearance, but were later released.
Police said fingerprints found on the scene showed that Zungu spent the day at Mbizane’s home, and that the other man is no longer a suspect.
The case will commence on 23 May.
