Richard Mdluli has been at the centre of murder and corruption claims which saw him suspended in 2011.

CAPE TOWN - The ongoing fiasco around police boss Richard Mdluli is affecting morale among ordinary police officers, the Institute for Security Studies warned on Wednesday.

Mdluli was moved out of South African Police Services's (SAPS) intelligence unit to the operations division, while claims of a conspiracy against him are probed.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa made the announcement in Parliament on Wednesday.

Several political parties, including the Democratic Alliance, have criticised the the minister, saying he has taken action too late, and that Mdluli should have been suspended and not simply moved to a similar position in a different unit.

Mdluli has been mired in a swirl of controversy amid claims of murder, fraud, nepotism and political conspiracies.

He was suspended last year while facing murder and fraud charges is separate cases. He was reinstated in March after both cases were withdrawn.

The institute’s Johan Burger said, “The allegations that he is making about the conspiracy to block him and to prevent him from coming to the National Commission is causing tension and causing division within the police services.”
