CAPE TOWN - People Against Suffering, Oppression and Poverty (Passop) on Wednesday expressed its concern over a rumour that Home Affairs may move reception centres.

The Maitland Refugee Reception Centre received a notice that one of its lease agreements would be terminated at the end of May.

However, the department said it was trying to negotiate with the landlord.

But Passop's Braam Hanekom said the department had enough time to sort this out.

“The Department of Home Affairs has had over a year to find alternative premises. Home Affairs appears to want to move the refugee centre to the borders and that would mean evicting refugees from the Western Cape.”

In January, the centre made headlines after it emerged that refugees were being victimised.

A Zimbabwean refugee accused security guards of assaulting him, while a Bangladeshi national died while waiting in line.
