JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has just announced in Parliament that controversial crime intelligence head Richard Mdluli is being moved from his position.
Mthethwa says Mdluli was informed on Wednesday that he would be shifted to another division to be decided by police management.
Mdluli has been embroiled in a storm of controversy over claims of phone-tapping, mismanagement, murder and fraud.
In 2011, the controversial cop was suspended after he was charged with fraud and corruption, but the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) provisionally withdrew charges against him.
Mdluli reportedly wrote to President Jacob Zuma a month before charges were withdrawn.
The City Press claimed Mdluli offered to “assist the president to succeed” if he was reinstated.
Mdluli was also charged with murdering Oupa Ramogibe, the man who married his former lover.
Both the fraud and murder cases were withdrawn and Mdluli was reinstated as head of crime intelligence in March.
