CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has succeeded in getting the Richard Mdluli saga back on the Parliamentary agenda.

Speaking on the John Maytham Show, the DA’s Diane Kohler-Barnard said she asked Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police to call Minister Nathi Mthethwa before the National Assembly.

He will have to explain why the Crime Intelligence boss was still in office, despite murder and fraud claims against him.

Kohler-Barnard said committee chair Sindi Chikunga finally agreed to her request.

In 2011, the controversial cop was charged and suspended, but the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) provisionally withdrew charges against him.

According to a City Press report, Mdluli allegedly wrote to President Jacob Zuma a month before charges were withdrawn.

The paper said Mdluli offered to “assist the president to succeed ” if he was reinstated.

Charges against him were subsequently dropped.

The Presidency was then accused of interfering in the case.

Mdluli is tipped to take over from suspended Police Commissioner Bheki Cele, who faces charges of mismanagement.
