JOHANNESBURG - Eyewitness News understands South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) CEO Nazir Alli tried to resign before, but was persuaded to stay.

The CEO allegedly wanted to quit because of his frustration with the agency’s board.

In a surprise announcement on Tuesday morning, Sanral revealed that it has accepted Alli’s resignation.

The company declined to give any details.

Late in April, Pretoria’s North Gauteng High Court granted an interdict to stop the controversial Gauteng e-tolling project, pending the outcome of a legal review.

Sanral was responsible for the multi-billion rand project.

REACTION

Some organisations have labelled the CEO an “arrogant dictator”, while others reflected on his achievements.

Transport spokesperson Tiyani Rikhotso said, “Minister [S’bu Ndebele] believes under Alli’s leadership, South Africa developed a road network that can compete with the best in the world.”

Earlier, ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza said Alli’s decision to leave the agency took them by surprise.

He said they will respect his decision.

Meanwhile, the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (OUTA)’s Wayne Duvenage said the court ruling probably played a role in Alli’s departure.

The Democratic Alliance’s Ian Ollis said he will ask Parliament to call Sanral to give a full explanation.
