CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Metro Police Chief, Wayne le Roux, on Monday said they were looking to expand their Gang Unit to other areas.

Police said the so-called Long Island and Vatos gangs clashed in Gugulethu on Saturday night.

Alleged gang members reportedly threw stones and damaged several homes in the township.

No one was injured and one person has been arrested.

Le Roux said their Gang Unit, which formed in December, has been restricted to certain areas.

“With the pilot project, our focus was in Hanover Park and Mitchell’s Plain. We have already done our planning. The next phase is to roll it out in other areas.”

He said the Gang Unit has been very successful.

“Since 1 December, we arrested more than 85 to 90 people. Various people were taken in for questioning, obviously working with other role-players, both internal and external.”
