CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town's Metal Theft Unit on Monday said it has noticed an increase in the number of so-called bucket shops in the Khayelitsha township.

The area has become a hub for the metal theft trade.

Bucket shops are scrap yards operated from a home without proper licensing.

The Copperhead's Neil Arendse said, “The area was never a hotspot for us prior to this year. Now we find it to be one of the major role players to being a hotspot area.”

He said they arrested the co-owners of a scrap yard dealer in Elsiesriver on Friday on stolen goods charges.
