JOHANNESBURG - Government is yet to respond to comments made by Auditor-General Terence Nombembe who warned government that the country’s situation was dire.

Nombembe on Thursday said democracy was being weakened by poor governance.

Earlier in 2012, Nedbank chairperson Reuel Khoza warned that South Africa's rule of law was being undermined by a strange breed of leaders.

According to the Business Day newspaper Nombembe sounded the alarm at a business function late last week.

He said people employed by government to deliver services were ill-equipped to do so and bad results were becoming the order of the day.

He warned that his attempts to hold government responsible were often in vain, as departments failed to respond or take the Auditor-General seriously.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (SACCI) Neren Rau said, “Government has certainly aspired to adopting the highest levels of monitoring but despite these efforts, we still find numerous challenges especially in terms of delivery.”
