JOHANNESBURG - There is no need for the proposed Protection of Information Bill (POIB), as there is no security threat to the South African Government, Congress of the People (COPE)’s party leader said.

COPE’s Mosiuoa Lekota told Soweto residents on Sunday, that the bill will benefit corrupt government officials.

COPE is one of the opposition parties campaigning to stop the proposed bill from being passed as a law.

The bill is currently before the National Council of Provinces' ad-hoc committee.

The party said it rejects the bill because it will force the state to hide corruption and discourage whistle blowing.

Lekota compared the proposed bill to legislation that had anti-apartheid activists and leaders detained.
