JOHANNESBURG - Cabinet on Friday condemned public spats and corrupt officials within the police force.

But the executive arm refused to comment on controversial Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli.

He was reinstated after charges of fraud and corruption were controversially withdrawn by the National Prosecuting Authority.

Mdluli is also linked to the murder of Oupa Ramogibe in Vosloorus.

Ramogibe was linked to Mdluli's ex-girlfriend.

Minister in the Presidency Collin Chabane said Cabinet  was worried about public arguments between senior police officials.

He said officials did not discuss the Mdluli saga directly.

“It will be unfair to expect Cabinet to discuss case-by-case [issues].”

Chabane was also directly asked whether Cabinet understood that people were worried that Mdluli is in charge of tapping phone calls.

There is intense speculation that President Jacob Zuma could appoint Mdluli to replace suspended Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele.

Zuma could use the powers of the police to monitor political opponents.
