JOHANNESBURG - The man hailed as the "Birthday Rapist" was due to return to court on Friday to continue testifying in his own defence.

Mlungisi Mtshali was arrested in 2011 and charged with raping at least 20 women he allegedly lured to seedy hotels in Hillbrow in central Johannesburg.

Mtshali denied raping the women and claimed they were drawn to him and freely accompanied him to the hotels.

He was expected to continue testifying in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court detailing the various encounters.

Mtshali faces more than 120 counts of rape, fraud, theft and kidnapping.

The graphic designer claimed he was wrongfully accused by those who felt betrayed by him.

At the start of 2012 he was mistakenly set free by correctional services, after serving a three-month sentence for a minor crime, despite facing the massive rape trial.

He was rearrested after a nationwide manhunt.
