JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress Youth League’s (ANCYL) National Executive Committee (NEC) is due to meet this weekend to chart a way forward, after its leader Julius Malema was expelled from the ANC in April.

This is a key meeting.

The meeting is expected to see discussions over whether the league's deputy leader Ronald Lamola will now take over as league leader and how the organisation will fill the position of secretary-general.

Sindiso Magaqa, the incumbent secretary-general, was suspended from the African National Congress (ANC) for one year, while spokesperson Floyd Shivambu was suspended for three years for swearing at a journalist and issuing a statement slamming Botswana.

The youth league's MEC members need to decide whether they will defy the ANC and continue to proclaim that Malema is their leader, despite his expulsion.

They also have to confirm whether they will go ahead and stick to their plan to hold a national general council.

If the NEC decides it will hold that conference, it could be the setting for a major political battle between those who support Malema and those who do not, thus determining the future of the league.

Meanwhile, Malema accused the ruling party of using him like a “condom”.

He said the ANC used him for its own purposes before throwing him away.
