JOHANNESBURG - Four minors accused of gang raping a Soweto teenager were released on bail by the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
They have been placed under house arrest and have agreed to move communities for their safety.
Seven boys, aged between 13 and 20, are accused of raping the 17-year-old girl and filming the assault on a cellphone.
The video then went viral.
Three of the minors, all aged 17, will now join three adult in court.
The case will resume in June.
Prosecutors are yet to decide on the criminal capacity of a 13-year-old suspect.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s Carina Coetzee said, “The charges that the state had out against them, for the purpose of this application, did not include rape.
“[There are also] other offences [they could face] under the Sexual Offences Act, including paying a teenager for sexual intercourse and using a minor for child pornography."
Coetzee said the suspects also face charges of creating and possessing child pornography.
