CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Local Government MEC Anton Bredell believes the idea of struggling municipalities being collapsed and absorbed into ones that do work needs to be thought over carefully.

President Jacob Zuma was answering questions about embattled municipalities in the National Assembly last week.

He told MPs government was looking into the matter.

Bredell said the idea needed to be debated.

“I think we must look at it from a point of view as a municipality that can survive, let them operate or put them in a position provide services to support the smaller municipalities.”

He said three of the province's five district municipalities are struggling financially.
