CAPE TOWN - Cosatu on Tuesday said workers' rights have very little meaning in the absence of enough quality jobs.
Tuesday marks Workers Day, or May Day as it is known globally.
Cosatu’s Tony Ehrenreich said many jobs have been lost because of incorrect policy choices.
Ehrenreich said what is needed now is faster job creation and more importantly the creation of decent jobs where workers rights aren't taken for granted.
"Rights are about values, contracts are like the contracts of marriage. You can't want to reduce your wife to a second class citizen, just like you can't reduce workers to second class citizens."
Ehrenreich said they would continue pushing for high standards where job creation is concerned.
