NPA mum on Breytenbach suspension

The NPA will not speak on the suspension of Glynnis Breytenbach, citing labour relations implications.

JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Thursday said it cannot discuss why it decided to suspend Glynnis Breytenbach.

She received her marching orders on Monday morning.

Breytenbach was working on Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli's case and had allegedly asked the NPA to review its decision to drop charges.

In February, the prosecuting body announced that it would withdraw charges against Mdluli.

Breytenbach then submitted a recommendation for the decision to be reviewed.

She was then suspended because of her conduct during an earlier case involving Kumba’s Sishen Mine and Imperial Crown Trading.

NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said, “In principle, we would like to exercise restraint in discussing the allegations against her because of the legal implications on labour related issues.”

Breytenbach supporters suggested that Mdluli is protected by senior figures in government.
