CAPE TOWN - The rape case involving an ANC Member of Parliament (MP) has been postponed in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The chairperson of Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications, Sikhumbuzo Kholwane, is accused of sexually assaulting a woman he previously had a relationship with.

The incident allegedly took place at his home in December.

Kholwane’s lawyer William Booth said, “The prosecutor requested that the matter be postponed while they wait for the Director of Public Prosecutions [DPP] to decide on whether to continue with the case or not.”

He said the matter had to be referred to the DPP because Kholwane is an MP.

“The magistrate has now granted the state a final postponement,” said Booth.

The matter was postponed to July 30.

Kholwane has not been suspended by the ANC pending an investigation.

Meanwhile, Interpol has named South Africa as the rape capital of the world.

According to statistics, a woman is raped every 17 minutes.

Interpol said South African women are more likely to be raped than educated.
