The City of Cape Town on Friday said the red flag would most likely be flying at False Bay beaches for the entire weekend.

Shark spotters issued the warning following several shark sightings close to the shore at various beaches.

Muizenberg and Fish Hoek beaches were temporarily closed for part of Friday.

The city's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said, “We appeal to the public to comply with the shark warning system and to obey instructions to clear the beach when required to do so. Beach goers are also urged to be vigilant along the False Bay coastline.”

Solomons-Johannes urged bathers, surfers and other water users to be vigilant.

“Law enforcement officers and shark spotters will be on duty and the warning will be in place for the rest of the weekend.”

Last week, Springbok bodyboarder David Lielenfeld was killed by a great white at Kogel Bay.

The 20-year-old was with his brother at the time of the incident.
