CAPE TOWN - Anti-apartheid activist Dr Mamphela Ramphele said on Thursday, as South Africans prepare to celebrate Freedom Day they must keep the country’s poor top of mind.
President Jacob Zuma is scheduled to address the main celebrations at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday.
This year's theme is "Working Together to Build Unity and Prosperity for all."
Ramphele said 18 years on, South Africa's upper middle and upper classes are doing well.
She said the rest of South Africans were struggling.
“If you are at the bottom, and particularly if you are rural and you are an African, the more things change the more things stay the same.
“We are starting to realise that social grants are even a trap.”
