A Vietnamese man was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday for trying to smuggle at least two sets of rhino horn in his luggage.
The 24-year-old suspect was caught by South African Revenue Services (SARS) officials.
It is understood the man had hidden the rhino horn inside statues which were carefully packed into his luggage.
The man was apparently in the country on a student visa and said he was here to learn English.
SARS said there were at least two sets of rhino horn in the man’s luggage but investigations will be done on Monday to determine the exact amount.
A forensic investigation is also expected to be carried out on the seized items.
South Africa has lost over 180 rhino this year to rhino poaching.
