The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) may add more charges against seven youths accused of video recording their alleged rape of a Soweto teenager, it said on Friday.
An eighth suspect will appear in court on Friday.
On Thursday, the seven accused were in court, with the proceedings held in camera as two of them are minors.
The matter was postponed until Wednesday.
The group were arrested this week, after a video of them allegedly gang raping a 17-year-old girl in Dobsonville in Soweto went viral.
She is currently being kept at a place of safety.
The NPA’s spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga confirmed that seven charges were provisionally decided upon.
“We also need to determine the conditions of their release, in respect of the minors. We’ve postponed the case until 25 April to conduct further investigations.”
Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko said authorities were yet to decide if the girl's mother will be charged.
“The police are still investigating the mother including social workers and all other systems."
Mazibuko said the girl still needs to undergo psychological tests.”
