Malema’s lawyers lodge appeal papers

These documents are thought to focus on a claim that the NDC did not consider mitigating factors.

Embattled Youth League leader Julius Malema's lawyers on Wednesday lodged his final appeal against the ANC’s decision to expel him.

The National Disciplinary Committee of Appeals (NDCA) had given his legal team until midnight on Wednesday to send their documents to Luthuli House.

In March, the National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) expelled the controversial politician after mitigation and aggravation hearings.

It is understood Malema’s documents were sent through electronically just before 5pm.

These documents are thought to focus on a claim that the NDC did not consider mitigating factors.

On Tuesday, the NDCA said Malema’s earlier suspension was right and proper because of his past behaviour.

It upheld a decision to suspend the Youth League leader for referring to President Jacob Zuma as a “dictator”.

The comments were made at gathering at Wits University in Johannesburg.

The appeals panel said Malema would continue to bring the ANC into disrepute if he was not suspended.

The ruling bars Malema from taking part in all ANC activities.
