Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa declined to comment on reports that he lied about state funds allegedly used to upgrade his private residence in KwaZulu-Natal.
The City Press reported that the Hawks are investigating claims that Mthethwa used nearly R200,000 from a crime intelligence fund to build a security wall around his home.
The paper has accused him of lying and has published copies of secret service claim forms which allegedly prove that the money was approved by the chief financial officer of crime intelligence.
The minster's spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said the Auditor General is investigating the claims.
“The minister asked that we not comment further because there is a process underway.”
