Stormers captain Jean de Villiers said All Black centre maestro Ma'a Nonu was the reason for his brilliant performance against the Blues on Friday night.
De Villiers scored a great individual try and captained the Stormers to a clinical 27-17 win over the New Zealanders.
The win places the Cape franchise on top of the South African and combined Super 15 logs.
De Villiers said outplaying Nonu was the key to victory.
“When you’re up against a guy like Nonu, I think you tend to lift your game. Over the years, we’ve played each other numerous times. A lot of games he had the better of me, so I had to up my game, otherwise it probably would have been different. He’s a classy player so I had to give it my best,” he said.
De Villiers added the backline just went back to playing basic rugby this week.
“There was some criticism about how our backs played in the first two weeks. I think the back played well today. They used the opportunities that came their way.”
