Local

A dozen of people, who were arrested after a violent protest in Villiersdorp, were released on a warning on Tuesday.

The residents appeared in the Caledon Magistrates Court earlier.

Meanwhile, Theewaterskloof Municipal officials said protesters tried to stop some workers residents from getting to work.

Hundreds of Destiny Farm residents staged a violent protest in the Overberg town on Monday.

They burnt down two buildings and damaged several others.

Protesters were demanding basic services.

Municipal Manager Stan Wallace said there were one or two incidents of public violence on Tuesday.

“There were incidents where people were prevented from going to work. I believe they started some veld fires, but the situation has calmed down,” he said.

Wallace says role-players are currently in a meeting.

“Some of the senior councillors and senior officials are currently locked in negotiations with the leaders of the protest action.”
