Demands for Eskom to release report

Environmental group Earthlife Africa are calling on government to pressure Eskom to release a report on the amount of radioactive waste released from the Koeberg nuclear power station.

The group on Sunday said the power station regularly released such figures but stopped after 2002.

Earthlife Africa decided to raise the issue about the dangers of nuclear energy, as Sunday marked the first anniversary of Japan’s Fukishima disaster.

Earthlife Africa’s Gray Maguire said such information should be made public and not be kept confidential.

He said Eskom was hiding the fact that the nuclear power station is aging.

“Since then we haven’t had any more public information with regards to what they releasing.”

Maguire said their calls for a report has fallen on deaf ears.

“At this stage we don’t know how high the levels of radioactive releases are.”
