Three Tshwane metro police officers were arrested for driving a car with false number plates on Thursday.
The incident happened days after Tshwane deputy metro police chief Ndumiso Jaca was suspended for allegedly committing the same offense.
The National Traffic Intervention Unit's (NTIU) high-tech gadget reader flagged the car on the N1 north.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation's Ashref Ismail said, “They are using [an] automatic number plate recognition system. This number plate beeped alerted the authorities."
He added the three men, who were in full Tshwane metro police uniform, tried to lie their way out of trouble.
“They were not able to explain why the vehicle was fitted with the number plates that were not recognised byeNaTIS. And [they] claimed they had been operating undercover,” Ismail added.
The officers will be charged for driving with false number plates.
