JOHANNESBURG - Emergency services workers are expected to continue with assessments on the M1 highway on Thursday morning following a fire.

Both lanes were closed off to traffic on Wednesday after a fire erupted in the underground tunnels.

The road has been partially opened on Thursday morning, with minimal disruptions to traffic expected.

EMS officials are yet to arrive on the scene, along with City Power, to conduct an inspection.

Parktown, Braamfontein and Newtown are still without power at this point due to the fire.

However, affected residents will likely find out on Thursday when exactly electricity will be restored, once City Power completes its assessment.

The utility has assured residents in the inner city that it will find alternative ways to provide power while repairs are underway.
