CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said the training of 1,000 municipal police recruits will help reduce the high crime rate in the province.

Winde visited the training session of candidates in Bellville on Monday.

After 18 months of rigorous physical training, the recruits are deployed to work in the most dangerous areas in the Cape as Metro police and Law Enforcement Advancement Programme (LEAP) officers.

Winde said the intense training of the recruits was critical in building a safer province.

"These men and women are being sent to the toughest of environments around. They are facing gangsters, people with guns, they really are going into different environments so they must be trained. We have to give them the best technology we can as a backup, but again training, training, training."
