CAPE TOWN - Western Cape MEC for Community Safety Reagen Allen said that an incident of alleged gang violence in Hillview, near Lavender Hill, which saw three people shot dead, could have been avoided.

Concerns have been raised about ongoing gang violence in the area, where its alleged 20 people have been killed in gang-related incidents in the last two months.

Allen said gang violence flared up in the area in March when five murders and seven attempted murders were reported.

"During that particular month, the engagements with the South African Police Service (SAPS) in our oversight role already commenced to ensure that we can ultimately curb the violence hence this weekend what we have seen. It should have been avoided."
