SASCO hopeful Nomvalo's appointment as NSFAS administrator will bring improvements

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Students Congress (SASCO) said it's hopeful that the appointment of Freeman Nomvalo as an administrator for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will help improve the state of the funding scheme.

Nomvalo, the CEO of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), was appointed by Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande following the dissolution of the NSFAS board.

The appointment has been widely welcomed by different organisations, such as SASCO.

Following a number of changes for the embattled funding scheme this week, the appointment of Nomvalo has been viewed as commendable.

Education activist Hendrick Makaneta said it's good that a chartered accountant has been appointed to deal with the issues at NSFAS.

"Professor Nzimande should be hailed for taking practical steps by putting finance and audit professionals at the centre of the NSFAS leadership."

SASCO's Alungile Kamtshe said an administrator was much needed for the funding scheme.

"The board was kept busy with fighting and not taking crucial decisions that will impact the welfare of students positively."

Nzimande is expected to brief the media on this week's developments at NSFAS.
