CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde is advising visitors to the Overberg, Helderberg, and Cape Winelands areas to remain in their accommodation.

These districts are some of the worst affected by storm conditions since Sunday.

The premier has also called on the public to avoid bridges, passes, crossings and low-lying areas that can be flooded.

"Our teams are across this province will be dealing with closing of roads to remove danger, so please if you are travelling, try and avoid areas that can be flooded, and we are protecting you wherever. We need to be safe out there, that's my message, please we need to be safe.

"We have got flooding in some parts of the Overberg at the moment, the Buffelsjag low-level bridge, in Swellendam, we've got a bit of flooding there, so localised flooding, nothing major at the moment but the rain is falling and we say to the people, make sure that you are safe, don't take any chances in any of the low-lying areas."

The premier added: "This storm is still a level 9 warning, which means that specifically the Winelands and the Overberg area, there is a risk of flooding, so please we need to make sure that we keep safe."

Meanwhile, the provincial Disaster Management chief, Colin Deiner, said technology had also been at the forefront of identifying affected areas.

"Looking at the risks, we have quite a lot of technology where we would take the weather warning when we receive it, and we would process it and see which areas are at risk. That could be whatever structure, could be an old age home, be it a university, we would identify it as an isolated risk in that area, and together with the district, we would make a decision."
