JOHANNESBURG - The family spokesperson of a young man who a prominent Cape Town musician allegedly raped, says his loved ones hope for a fair and speedy trial.

The 50-year-old man's rape trial got under way at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Thursday, where the victim gave testimony in camera.

The man is accused of abusing his former student when he was 14 years old in 2013.

The alleged assault continued until the victim was 20 years old.

The jazz pianist was arrested in 2020 and is currently out on bail.

Family spokesperson June Major says the dragging of the case has taken a toll on the victim and the family.

"There are eight charges, and he pleads not guilty to each one. His attorney came late yesterday [Thursday], and emotions were running high thinking is it going to be another postponement again. But thank God it was not another postponement, trial took place, the victim started to testify, so we are really happy for that."
