City warns long distance drivers to check vehicles before travelling over Easter weekend
Authorities called on long distance public transport operators to conduct proper vehicle checks before embarking on their travels, in a bid to curb road fatalities.

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town municipality has appealed to long distance public transport operators to get their vehicles checked before hitting the road over the long weekend.
The city says examiners have conducted vehicle safety checks on 327 buses, midi-busses, minibuses and trailers in the first six days of the operation.

The city's Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said they would be at the Joe Qqabi, Bellville, and CBD public transport interchanges on Friday.
"Easter is traditionally a dark time on South Africa’s roads. The city is doing all it can to ensure a further decrease in these statistics, but it is a shared responsibility. So, if you’re in the long distance transport industry, get your vehicles checked, and make sure that your drivers too are fit for the task."
